So you want to play guitar eh? Well this may seem like a shock but in order to play guitar you might want to buy a guitar!

Pretty much every beginner’s guide book starts out on this foot so I will too.  Shopping around is essential, obviously, but even more so is making sure you pick the right guitar.  If you are just starting out, I would recommend buying the cheapest guitar you can find and get a feel for it first.  No sense spending a month’s pay on a guitar just to find out it’s not for you, right?  Most pawn shops will sell decent guitars for very low prices, usually around $50-$150.  However, from my own experience I suggest that you go to Target where they sell a quality accoustic guitar for $99.99.  Its not the most beautiful guitar in the world, but it has a very clear sound and amazing durablilty – not to mention it’s brand new and not used.  Perfect for someone just testing the strings.

For the more experienced player who knows that guitar is the way to go, you will want a to buy a guitar that will last for a while, won’t break, and works for the kind of music you want to play.  This means RESEARCH!  Don’t worry, its nowhere near as bad as you think.  Just look up different kinds of guitars on online instrument retailers and read the reviews that go along with them.  Try and find one that’s real shiny… haha or whatever you’re into.

Personally, I like to SEE what I’m buying in person so I recommend heading to your local music store/outlet and finding the same model.  I like Guitar Center but anything will do.  Now all you need to do is buy the darn thing and get to work!
